Orchard worker

  • Summer (June - mid September
    • Working from the ground and 7 foot ladders (rarely above third step).
    • 8-9 hour days, beginning 7 am (6 am for cherry picking)
    • 1 hour lunch break, 10 minute break in orchard mid-morning and mid-afternoon
    • 5-7 days / week (Optimally 1-2 days off /week, but when the fruit is ripe...)
      • Thinning peaches
      • Weeding young trees
      • Picking
        • Cherries
        • Apricots
        • Peaches & Nectarines
        • Plums & Pluots
  • Autumn (post harvest - mid November)
    • 8 hour days, beginning 8 am (9 am November)
    • 1 hour lunch break, 10 minute break in orchard mid-morning and mid-afternoon
    • 5 days / week 
    • Orchard removal (2-3 acres)
      • Loppers to remove wood 1" diameter and smaller
      • Windrow brush for flailing
      • Chainsaw, remove and stack limbs
      • Reposition trellis and irrigation lines
      • Following excavator, loading/unloading stumps
      • Following tractor work, stump & rock removal
    • Weeding young trees
    • Clean up and organize sheds and orchards.
    • Rock & root removal from fallow fields
    • Chainsaw & removal dead & weak limbs from producing orchard
    • Firewood
      • Cutting to length with tractor powered buzz saw
      • Loading trucks for delivery
    • Days off
  • Winter (leaf fall mid to late November to early March)
    • 6-8 hour days, beginning 8-9 am (no pruning when temperature below 20 F)
    • 1/2 hour lunch break, 10 minute break in orchard mid-morning and mid-afternoon
    • 5-7 days / week (Pruning hours susceptible to inclement weather; crew may work more when the allows).
      • Loading firewood (on occasion, November - December)
      • Pruning
        • Pruning requires training & guidance.  As a rule, 3 years experience to become fully competent and efficient.  Only dedicated and committed workers are offered this job.
        • Apricots, plums, peaches & nectarines
      • Education & training
        • Western Colorado Horticultural Society
          • Tour, educational meetings and trade show for fruit industry
          • Tues - Thursday, third week of January
